Nevada to Oregon and Back, and a 365 Club Meetup

My Mom was gracious enough to bring me down to Nevada to not only spend time with her and Terry, but also meet up with the rest of my 365 club for a weekend. Mom and I also had the privilege of driving up and visiting Ryan and Jenni in Redmond, which of course meant that I got to visit with Smith Rock a little too. I've really been enjoying my desert and getting to see my family (Susie included), and I'm so looking forward to spending some more time with my dear self portrait friends!

  • I've had an inspiration lately to try some HDR. I did this, didn't like it, and then hand-layered images in photoshop, to create... a learning experience. Unfortunately I was convinced that it was better than PS's Merge HDR Pro option, and slapped it on Facebook even though it wasn't great. Then I went back to the digitally done HDR and played with it a little bit, and found that it looked... a lot better than mine! So, regardless of what's on Facebook, here's Smith Rock, and my first real HDR effort. Interesting!

  • Still HDR inspired, I thought, can you make an HDR pano?
So, I tried. But ended up with a regular pano. That's okay!

Oh, Red Rocks. I love it. It's like visiting an old friend.

I drove out into the desert to just visit, and catch the evening sunset if possible, when I saw that I was missing the light. I ended up going up to the park gate anyway, only to find out that I needed cash or check. I turned to exit, and jumped out at the nearby parking lot, rushing out to photograph the sun
set - because even though the initial light had moved on, the clouds nearer the mountains were drenched in light, which I didn't expect. I found my finger on the shutter - only to see the words 'no cf' flash on my camera. I knew exactly what I'd done - left it at home in the card reader! I panicked, and was about to text John about the tragedy, when I realized that in the midst of all my carelessness I had an extra cf card in my pocket, and I thereby managed to capture the golden hour.
Sometimes I wonder how far in advance God plans these things just so I can be blessed.
